SEPULTURA – CHAOS A.D.

Arise was released 34 years ago, in fact the band celebrated this anniversary just some days ago (25th March) but I have preferred to catch up with this album because two main reasons, it is my favorite Sepultura album and the “party” started here.

Ok, as I mentioned before this is my favorite one maybe just because it was the first reaching my hands but the concept of the album took me completely.

Comparing Chaos A.D. to the previous one, this album focused on slower but not less heavy music, entering into groovy rhythms and tribal elements (“Kaiowas”).

The three first songs are for me The Holy Trinity written by this band, “Slave New World” probably is the most thrashy song you can find on this record and listening “Refuse/Resist” and “Territory” (my favorite Sepultura track ever) you can realize about how the lyrics changed to a more socially and politically topics, and living nowadays we may agree that Territory lyrics are more present than ever.

“Amen”, “Propaganda”, “Nomad” or the cover “The Hunt”, all of them show an evolution on the sound but keeping old school Sepultura elements.

For me, Chaos A.D. was the perfect transition from the classic thrash metal to a new era and style, representing the highest point in the band’s career and popularity.

Chaos A.D. maintains its relevancy and 32 years on, maybe it is not their best album but marks the end for the classic Sepultura years and from here on… you know.

Just a couple of curious things, the band had the piano that was used by Queen recording “Bohemian Rhapsody” in their studio sessions and the video for “Territory” was selected as Viewer’s Choice International at the MTV Video Music Awards 1994.

Arise salió hace 34 años; de hecho, la banda celebró el aniversario hace solo unos días (25 de marzo). Pero he preferido volver a este álbum por dos razones principales: es mi disco favorito de Sepultura y aquí es donde empezó realmente la “fiesta”.

Como dije antes, quizá sea mi favorito porque fue el primero que llegó a mis manos, pero el concepto del álbum me atrapó por completo.

Comparando Chaos A.D. con el anterior, este disco se centra en un sonido más lento pero no menos pesado, entrando en ritmos más groove y elementos tribales (“Kaiowas”).

Las tres primeras canciones son para mí la Santísima Trinidad escrita por esta banda. “Slave New World” probablemente sea el tema más thrasher del disco, y escuchando “Refuse/Resist” y “Territory” (mi canción favorita de Sepultura de todos los tiempos) te das cuenta de cómo las letras cambiaron hacia temas más sociales y políticos. Y viviendo lo que vivimos hoy, podemos estar de acuerdo en que la letra de “Territory” está más presente que nunca.

“Amen”, “Propaganda”, “Nomad” o la versión de “The Hunt”, todas muestran una evolución en el sonido pero manteniendo elementos del Sepultura más clásico.

Para mí, Chaos A.D. fue la transición perfecta del thrash metal clásico hacia una nueva era y estilo, representando el punto más alto de la carrera y la popularidad de la banda.

Chaos A.D. sigue siendo relevante y, 32 años después, quizá no sea su mejor álbum, pero marca el final de la etapa clásica de Sepultura y a partir de aquí… ya sabéis.

Un par de curiosidades: la banda tuvo en el estudio el mismo piano que Queen usó para grabar “Bohemian Rhapsody”, y el videoclip de “Territory” fue elegido Viewer’s Choice International en los MTV Video Music Awards de 1994.
