THE FALS – “WHERE COLD STEEL GLEAMS” 2026 (REVIEW)

The Fals has become one of the most distinctive forces within the German underground, shaping a form of blackened heavy metal built on tense riffs, direct structures and a dry, unpolished harshness. Everything in this album is designed to move forward, never to decorate.

Where Cold Steel Gleams, their second full‑length, shows clear evolution: more intent, more edge, more precision. The production is abrasive, almost sand‑blasted, crafted to transmit friction, dust and ritual violence. Despite its rawness, the album maintains a constant inner pulse — a forward‑driving force that turns each track into continuous motion.

It is a record that grows with repeated listens. The first encounter is impact; the second reveals structure; the third becomes habit. Crushing the Skull of the Insane Priest works as an immediate introduction to the album’s universe, setting tone and direction without preamble. Vigilance Renewed stands at the midpoint between aggression and energy. Iron Chains – Slaying the Apostles of Zyrbataar expands the album’s spectrum with a serpentine narrative. Pyramids is, for me, the perfect single — direct, memorable, immediate, effective both on its own and within the album’s flow.

The atmosphere moves between the ritualistic and the instinctive. Dark, yet driven by a vital impulse that distances it from the genre’s usual rigidity. A strange balance between movement and contemplation, between edge and pulse.

For me, there is a distant echo of the recent rawness of Darkthrone — not as a direct reference, but as a way of understanding harshness: primitive, direct, without artifice. More spirit than citation.

Where Cold Steel Gleams imposes itself. Cold, sharp, uncompromising, yet animated by an internal dynamism that makes it stand out within the European extreme metal landscape. A work that confirms The Fals’ direction and shows that the project has a long path ahead.

And just a few days ago, on May 22, the album was released on vinyl with a very cool design by Undercover Records.

The Fals se ha consolidado dentro del underground alemán como una de las propuestas más particulares del blackened heavy metal contemporáneo. Su enfoque se basa en riffs tensos, estructuras directas y una aspereza seca que rehúye cualquier pulido moderno. Todo en este disco está construido para avanzar, no para adornar.

Where Cold Steel Gleams, su segundo larga duración, muestra una evolución clara: más intención, más filo, más precisión. La producción es áspera, casi abrasiva, diseñada para transmitir fricción, polvo y violencia ritual. A pesar de esa crudeza, el álbum mantiene un pulso interno constante, una fuerza que empuja hacia adelante y convierte cada tema en un movimiento continuo.

Es un trabajo que crece con las escuchas. La primera impresión es de choque; la segunda revela estructura; la tercera convierte la experiencia en hábito. Crushing the Skull of the Insane Priest funciona como una introducción inmediata al universo del disco, marcando tono y dirección sin necesidad de preámbulos. Vigilance Renewed se sitúa en el punto exacto entre agresión y energía. Iron Chains – Slaying the Apostles of Zyrbataar amplía el espectro del álbum con una narrativa serpenteante. Pyramids es, para mí, el single perfecto: directo, memorable, inmediato, eficaz tanto por separado como dentro del flujo del disco.

La atmósfera se mueve entre lo ritual y lo instintivo. Oscuro, pero con un impulso vital que lo separa de la rigidez habitual del género. Un equilibrio extraño entre movimiento y contemplación, entre filo y pulso.

Para mí, hay un eco lejano de la crudeza reciente de Darkthrone, no como referencia explícita, sino como una forma de entender la aspereza: directa, primitiva, sin artificios. Una influencia que aparece más como espíritu que como cita.

Where Cold Steel Gleams impone. Frío, afilado, sin concesiones, pero con un dinamismo interno que lo hace destacar dentro del panorama extremo europeo. Un trabajo que confirma la dirección de The Fals y deja claro que el proyecto tiene recorrido.

Y, hace apenas unos días, el 22 de mayo, el álbum ha sido editado por Undercover Records en un vinilo con un diseño muy chulo.
