TAAKE – En Skog av Nidstang (2026) | Review 9/10

With En Skog av Nidstang, Taake reaches its ninth full-length and reaffirms Hoest’s status as one of the most consistent figures in Norwegian black metal. Released through Dark Essence Records, the album continues the structural approach of its predecessor, presenting four extended compositions that function as independent chapters within a solitary creative vision.

Hoest once again performs all instruments – guitars, bass, vocals, and drums… while the production is shaped by Bjørnar Nilsen (mix) and Øystein G. Brun (mastering). The result is a deliberately raw, abrasive, and exposed sound, with guitars occupying the center of the landscape through their unmistakable vocals. Melodic lines, sinister tremolo passages, and atmospheric sections unfold without the need for keyboards, relying instead on open resonance and carefully spaced phrasing.

The cover art reinforces the album’s concept: a stark black-and-white image in which Hoest’s face merges with tree bark, echoing the title’s reference to a cursed forest and reflecting the isolation that defines this phase of the project.

Musically, En Skog av Nidstang balances aggression and atmosphere with ease, while also revealing a notable degree of compositional complexity beneath its raw exterior. “Einstoeingen og eg”, running over ten minutes, moves between acceleration, grandeur, and restrained tension. Its opening section features remarkably intricate riffs, with structures that verge on the progressive, showcasing a level of melodic and rhythmic development rarely found in orthodox black metal. It is a clear example of how Hoest, from Bergen, displays his compositional depth, crafting ideas whose internal architecture occasionally recalls the logic of classical music applied to black metal.

In “Et dyr tok min hud”, this sophistication becomes evident from the very first moment… the track opens with a long, epic melodic riff, built with a narrative intent that carries the entire piece. It is an introduction that not only stands out for its breadth, but also highlights Hoest as one of black metal’s most expressive vocalists, capable of shaping intensity, texture, and presence without losing the genre’s essential harshness.

“Engler” reinforces the album’s commitment to classic black metal vocabulary, while “Av guds ville naade” delivers a particularly memorable finale: a majestic closing melody that unfolds naturally and demonstrates once again that Taake knows how to end an album like very few bands in the genre. It is a conclusion that not only completes the work, but also confirms that this record will stand proudly within Taake’s imposing discography.

After listening to the album five or six times, its true nature becomes clear: this is one of those works that grows with repeated listens, revealing new nuances, new layers of composition, and new interpretative details each time. It is a record that opens slowly, rewards attention, and reflects Hoest’s creative maturity in this stage of his career.

Compared to Et Hav av Avstand, this new work adopts a more direct and assertive tone, less introspective and more oriented toward rhythmic energy and atmospheric rawness. Yet it avoids nostalgia: its harshness is intentional, its atmosphere instinctive, and its execution confident. The complexity present in several passages, especially in the first two tracks, adds an extra dimension that confirms Hoest’s compositional strength.

En Skog av Nidstang stands as another solid chapter in Taake’s discography. It is a concise, focused, and traditionally rooted album that demonstrates Hoest’s continued exploration of his own language within black metal without losing identity or purpose.

    Veredicto final: 9/10
