Tales of Mike – Human (2025) Review

I first discovered Tales of Mike thanks to Alex from Fetzner Death Records, who showed me the album right when it was released. I listened to Human immediately upon its publication on October 31st, 2025, but it is only now, through the work I’m doing with Obsidian Sanctum PR, that I’ve finally decided to write the review this record deserves.

Human is the full-length debut of Michael Heß’s project, and it represents a significant evolution from Landscape of Sorrow. One of the first things that stands out is the excellent production quality: powerful, clear, and balanced, yet still raw enough to preserve the emotional weight behind the music. Every instrument is executed with precision and intention — nothing feels out of place, and the mix allows each element to breathe.

The album opens with “Nomen est Omen”, a spoken invocation that sets a ritualistic tone. “Nevermore” follows with shifting structures and dynamic grooves, showcasing the band’s tightness and expressive range. The instrumental execution throughout the album is exceptional: – guitars that move effortlessly between aggression and melancholy, – a warm, organic bass presence, – and drums that deliver both weight and nuance.

Vocally, Gonzalo Civita delivers a standout performance. His clean passages, growls, and furious mid‑range all fit perfectly within the emotional architecture of each track. The vocals never feel imposed — they merge with the music and elevate it.

“Money Tree” deserves a special mention. It is one of the fastest and most energetic tracks on the album, and here — and only here — I can hear a faint echo of the rapid‑fire spirit of Judas Priest or Megadeth. Not as imitation, but as a shared sense of urgency and metallic bite. The track bursts forward with sharp riffing and a contagious momentum that contrasts beautifully with the album’s more atmospheric moments.

“Ancient Mirror” dives into doom‑death territory with atmospheric depth, while “Hourglass” blends technical finesse with philosophical reflection. The closing “Swan Song” is a progressive, introspective finale that ties together the album’s themes of identity, betrayal, and resilience.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Human is that, beyond isolated moments like “Money Tree,” no clear comparison comes to mind. Tales of Mike draws from various metal traditions, but the result is something deeply personal. The album feels lived, not assembled from influences.

With its sincerity, emotional depth, excellent production, flawless execution, and unique identity, Human stands as a powerful debut. Tales of Mike is carving its own path in the underground, and this album proves that the project has a voice entirely its own.

Conocí a Tales of Mike gracias a Alex de Fetzner Death Records, quien me mostró el álbum justo en el momento de su lanzamiento. Lo escuché inmediatamente tras su publicación el 31 de octubre de 2025, pero es ahora, desde el trabajo que realizo con Obsidian Sanctum PR, cuando por fin me animo a escribir la reseña que este disco merece.

Human es el debut de larga duración del proyecto de Michael Heß, y supone un salto notable respecto a Landscape of Sorrow. Desde la primera escucha destaca la gran calidad de la producción: potente, clara y equilibrada, pero sin perder ese filo emocional crudo que define el álbum. Todos los instrumentos están muy bien ejecutados, con una mezcla que permite que cada elemento tenga su espacio y su función.

El disco abre con “Nomen est Omen”, una invocación hablada que marca un tono ritual. “Nevermore” entra con estructuras cambiantes y grooves dinámicos que muestran la solidez del trío. La ejecución instrumental es impecable: guitarras que alternan agresividad y melancolía con precisión, un bajo cálido y orgánico, y una batería que combina contundencia y matices sin caer en la repetición.

En el apartado vocal, Gonzalo Civita ofrece una interpretación sobresaliente. Sus voces limpias, sus growls y su registro furioso encajan perfectamente con cada atmósfera. Nada suena forzado: las voces se integran en la narrativa musical y la potencian.

“Money Tree” merece una mención especial. Es uno de los temas más rápidos y directos del álbum, y aquí sí puedo encontrar un eco del espíritu acelerado de los temas rápidos de Judas Priest o Megadeth. No como copia, sino como una afinidad en la energía, la urgencia y el filo metálico del riffing. El tema avanza con una fuerza contagiosa que contrasta con los pasajes más atmosféricos del disco.

“Ancient Mirror” se adentra en un doom‑death atmosférico cargado de simbolismo, mientras “Hourglass” combina técnica y reflexión. “Swan Song” cierra el álbum con un final progresivo e introspectivo que resume los temas centrales: identidad, traición y resistencia.

Lo más sorprendente de Human es que, más allá de momentos puntuales como “Money Tree”, no existe una banda de referencia clara. Tales of Mike bebe de varias tradiciones del metal, pero el resultado es algo profundamente personal. El álbum no parece construido a partir de influencias, sino vivido desde dentro.

Con su sinceridad, su profundidad emocional, su excelente producción y su ejecución impecable, Human se presenta como un debut poderoso y una declaración de identidad. Tales of Mike está trazando su propio camino en el underground, y este álbum demuestra que el proyecto tiene una voz verdaderamente única.
