First of all I have to say that this was the first record I got with my own money at the record store in my city so perhaps I might be not very impartial trying to do this review.
Clearly this was and maybe still is a divisive record but being honest let´s try walking in their shoes, with a new singer trying to replace one of the most charismatic singer in metal history, with grunge in its peak and coming from a very decent album (1992 Fear of the Dark).
We can not put the blame on Blaze Bailey or anyone else, it would have been very easy releasing a new album following the typical Maiden style but not, they delivered a very difirent album , the darkest and most depressed in the whole Iron Maiden career delibertely or not and this is why I appreciate this album.
Everything seems to be wrong since the beginning, when you play the first track “Sign of the Cross” the shock comes with the gregorian chants…what the hell is this? Well, for me this song is one the biggest masterpiece in Maiden history and later “Man on the Edge” for instance, resembles the typical maiden fare with lustily paced Heavy Metal, “Lord of the Flies” based on the book and film of the same name or “Blood on the World´s Hands” written about the Bosnian war are great songs as well and don´t get my wrong of course there are other songs that are in a lower step but still hold the level until the last song.
This record definitely deserves the recognition gained over the years and if we exclude “Brave New World” and maybe “A Matter of Life and Death” it is the last great Iron Maiden album and worthy to be listened completely, I know maybe this is an unpopular opinión.
A solid 8/10.

Antes que nada, tengo que decir que este fue el primer disco que compré con mi propio dinero en la tienda de discos de mi ciudad, así que quizá no sea del todo imparcial al hacer esta reseña.
Está claro que este fue —y quizá aún sea— un disco divisivo, pero siendo honestos intentemos ponernos en su lugar: un nuevo cantante intentando reemplazar a uno de los vocalistas más carismáticos de la historia del metal, el grunge en su punto más alto y viniendo de un álbum muy decente (Fear of the Dark, 1992).
No podemos culpar a Blaze Bayley ni a nadie más. Habría sido muy fácil sacar un disco siguiendo el estilo típico de Maiden, pero no: entregaron un álbum muy diferente, el más oscuro y deprimido de toda la carrera de Iron Maiden, deliberadamente o no, y por eso aprecio este disco.
Todo parece ir “mal” desde el principio: cuando pones el primer tema, “Sign of the Cross”, el impacto llega con los cantos gregorianos… ¿qué demonios es esto? Bueno, para mí esta canción es una de las mayores obras maestras de la historia de Maiden. Más adelante, “Man on the Edge”, por ejemplo, recuerda al estilo típico de la banda con un Heavy Metal rápido y enérgico. “Lord of the Flies”, basada en el libro y la película del mismo nombre, o “Blood on the World’s Hands”, escrita sobre la guerra de Bosnia, también son grandes canciones. Y no me malinterpretes: claro que hay otros temas un escalón por debajo, pero aun así mantienen el nivel hasta la última pista.
Este disco definitivamente merece el reconocimiento que ha ganado con los años y, si excluimos Brave New World y quizá A Matter of Life and Death, es el último gran álbum de Iron Maiden y digno de escucharse de principio a fin. Sé que quizá esta sea una opinión impopular.
Un sólido 8/10.
